Tingkat Perbandingan 1 (The Degrees Of Comparison 1)

A. Ada 3 tingkat perbandingan yaitu:

1. Tingkat biasa (positive degree)
2. Tingkat lebih atau tingkat perbandingan (comparative degree)
3. Tingkat paling atau tingkat ter- (superlative degree)

B. Perhatikan beberapa daftar tingkat perbandingan dibawah ini:

1. big (besar) - bigger than (lebih besar daripada) - the biggest (paling besar/ terbesar)
2. small (kecil) - smaller than (lebih kecil drpd) - the smallest (paling kecil/ terkecil)
3. fat (gemuk) - fatter than (lebih gemuk drpd) - the fattest (paling gemuk/ tergemuk)
4. thin (kurus) - thinner than (lebih kurus drpd) - the thinnest (paling kurus/ terkurus)
5. thick (tebal) - thicker than (lebih tebal drpd) - the thickest (paling tebal/ tertebal)
6. new (baru) - newer than (lebih baru drpd) - the newest (paling baru/ terbaru)
7. old (tua) - older than (lebih tua drpd) - the newest (paling tua/ tertua)
8. young (muda) - younger than (lebih muda drpd) - the youngest (paling muda/ termuda)
9. cheap (murah) - cheaper than (lebih murah drpd) - the cheapest (paling murah/ termurah)

13. long (panjang) - longer than (lebih panjang drpd) - the longest (paling panjang/ terpanjang)
14. hard (sukar) - harder than (lebih sukar drpd) - the hardest (paling sukar/ tersukar)

C. Contoh didalam kalimat:

1. Tom besar. (Tom is big)
   Jerry lebih besar daripada Tom. (Jerry is bigger than Tom)
   John paling besar dari semuanya. (John is the biggest of all)
2. Ann kecil. (Ann is small)
   Lucy lebih kecil daripada Ann. (Lucy is smaller than Ann)
   Bella paling kecil dari semuanya. (Bella is the smallest of all)
3. Steve gemuk. (Steve is fat)
   Bryan lebih gemuk daripada Steve. (Bryan is fatter than Steve)
   James paling gemuk dari semuanya. (James is the fattest of all)

D.  Latihan (Exercise). Ikuti contoh diatas.

1. John kurus. Tom lebih kurus daripada John. Jerry paling kurus dari semuanya.
2. Majalah tebal. Buku lebih tebal daripada majalah. Kamus paling tebal dari semuanya.
3. Sepeda baru. Mobil lebih baru daripada sepeda. Kereta api paling baru dari semuanya.
4. Sekolah tua. Perpustakaan lebih tua daripada sekolah. Kantin paling tua dari semuanya.
5. Anton muda. Bella lebih muda daripada Anton. Cinderella paling muda dari semuanya.

E.  Contoh Dialog.

1. Jerry= Is John big?
              Apakah John besar?
2. Tom = Yes, he is.
               Ya.
3. Jerry= Who is bigger, John or James?
               Siapa (yg) lebih besar, John atau James?
4. Tom = James is bigger than James.
               James lebih besar daripada James.
5. Jerry= Who is the biggest?
               Siapa (yg) paling besar?
6. Tom = Bryan is the biggest of all.
              Bryan paling besar dari semuanya.
7. Jerry= Is Indonesia bigger than Singapore?
              Apakah Indonesia lebih besar daripada Singapore?
8. Tom = Yes, it is.
              Ya.
9. Jerry= Is Australia the biggest country on the world?
              Apakah Australia negara paling besar di dunia?
10. Tom = No, it is not.
               Tidak.
11. Jerry= What is the biggest country (on the world)?
               Apa negara terbesar (di dunia)?
12. Tom = Russia.
               Russia.
13. Jerry= What is the biggest animal?
               Apa binatang paling besar?
14. Tom = It is elephant.
               Gajah.

F. Contoh kalimat dengan "tingkat lebih".

1. Tom is 10 years old. Tom berumur 10 tahun.
   Jerry is 12 years old. Jerry berumur 12 tahun.
   Cindy is 15 years old. Cindy berumur 15 tahun.
   Dari 3 kalimat diatas, bisa disimpulkan bahwa:
   Tom is younger than Jerry. Tom lebih muda daripada Jerry.
   Jerry is older than Tom. Jerry lebih tua daripada Tom.
   Cindy is the oldest of all. Cindy paling tua dari semuanya (dari Jerry dan Tom).
